While the rest of the Middle East and much of the world face severe water shortages, Israel has achieved the impossible. It has become a global water superpower. And the story of how they did it is nothing short of a modern miracle.
When the State of Israel was founded in 1948, the challenges were immense. The new nation was surrounded by hostile neighbors and faced an immediate influx of immigrants who needed food and water. The founding fathers of Israel knew that if they could not conquer the desert, the desert would conquer them.
They understood that water was life. So, they built the National Water Carrier, a massive infrastructure project designed to pump water from the Sea of Galilee in the north to the parched lands of the south. The Invention That Changed Agriculture

The water from Israeli sinks, showers, and toilets is treated to near drinking quality levels and then sent directly to farms for agricultural use.
This means that farmers do not have to rely on unpredictable rainfall. They have a steady, guaranteed supply of water all year round. By recycling its wastewater, Israel freed up massive amounts of fresh drinking water for its citizens. But even that was not enough to secure the future.
As droughts persisted in the 1990s, the Sea of Galilee reached dangerously low levels. The Israeli government knew they needed a permanent, drought proof solution. They looked to the west, to the vast expanse of the Mediterranean Sea.
Israel embarked on an ambitious program to build massive seawater reverse osmosis desalination plants along its coast. These engineering marvels take salty ocean water and push it through microscopic filters, removing the salt and leaving behind pure, fresh drinking water.
Today, there are five major desalination plants operating in Israel, providing nearly all of the tap water for the nation. The country is no longer dependent on the weather. Even if it does not rain for years, the people of Israel will still have plenty of water to drink. They are even building a pipeline to pump desalinated water back into the Sea of Galilee to replenish it when levels drop too low.
Israel's water miracle is a testament to the resilience, brilliance, and determination of the Jewish people. They took a land of sand and stone and turned it into a lush, green oasis. But Israel is not keeping this technology to itself.
As climate change accelerates and water scarcity threatens billions of people around the globe, Israel is sharing its knowledge.
