Mayor Zohran Mamdani has confirmed that his administration is in active discussions with the city's legal department to determine whether he has the authority to detain Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he arrives in New York for the United Nations General Assembly in September. He has stated publicly that he believes Netanyahu belongs in The Hague and that he will do whatever the law allows to act on the International Criminal Court arrest warrant. This is not a slip of the tongue or a moment of political theater. This is a deliberate, calculated move by a sitting mayor to criminalize Israel's right to self defense.
The justification for this threat stems from a deeply flawed warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. This is the same court that has consistently targeted Israel while ignoring the actual atrocities committed by terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah. It is a court that has never held Iran accountable for funding terror across the region. It has never issued warrants for the leaders of regimes that massacre their own people. But it found the time and the motivation to go after the Prime Minister of the only democracy in the Middle East. The bias is in plain sight.
A Kangaroo Court and a Political Stunt
The International Criminal Court has zero jurisdiction over Israel or the United States. Neither country is a member of this institution. The United States has never recognized the court's authority over its own citizens or its allies. The charges against the Israeli Prime Minister are nothing more than a politically motivated attack designed to delegitimize the Jewish state's right to defend itself against terror. By entertaining the idea of enforcing this baseless warrant Mayor Mamdani is not upholding international law. President Donald Trump responded quickly. He posted on social media that Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested in any way shape or form while in the United States of America. That is the right answer. That is the answer of a leader who understands what is at stake. The American people know that Israel is on the front lines of the global fight against radical Islamic terror. They understand that when Israel is strong America is safer. It is deeply troubling that local politicians are willing to undermine this critical alliance for their own political ambitions.
Israel's government also pushed back hard. In an official statement Israel called the ICC a kangaroo court and the arrest warrant bogus. They noted that Mamdani appears more interested in attacking the leader of the Jewish state than in addressing the real challenges facing New York City. That observation is worth sitting with for a moment. New York has real problems. Crime, housing costs, failing schools. Yet the mayor is spending his time and political capital on a stunt that targets America's closest ally in the Middle East.
Why This Matters Far Beyond New York

Across the Western world we are watching the normalization of anti Israel rhetoric in mainstream political spaces. When leaders in the West legitimize the false narratives pushed by international bodies they embolden terrorists and pour fuel onto the already raging fire of antisemitism.
The events of October 7 should have settled this debate. Hamas committed the worst massacre of Jewish people since the Holocaust. They murdered over 1,200 innocent men women and children. They took hundreds of hostages. Israel had every right and every obligation to respond with force. The Israel Defense Forces have fought that war with more care for civilian life than any army in history given the circumstances. The idea that the Prime Minister of Israel should be arrested for defending his people is morally obscene.
Now is the time for every supporter of Israel to raise their voice. We must demand that our leaders stand firmly with our allies and reject these politically motivated attacks. The bond between the United States and Israel is unbreakable because it is built on shared values, shared faith, and a shared commitment to freedom.
