The Gaza Death Toll
Accusation: Gaza's death toll is cited as proof that Israel deliberately targets civilians, with critics claiming that most of those killed were women and children.
The Short Answer
Every innocent death in Gaza is a tragedy, but the numbers are often misused. The total, now over 73,000, comes from the Hamas run Health Ministry, which does not separate fighters from civilians.
Israel says it killed more than 20,000 combatants. By the IDF's estimate of two to three civilians for every combatant, the ratio is one Israel argues is lower than in comparable urban wars.
Who Counts the Dead
The death toll quoted by the media comes from the Gaza Health Ministry, part of the Hamas government. The UN and many news outlets repeat its figures, often without explaining where they come from.
In January 2026 an Israeli military official said the overall number was roughly in line with Israel's own estimate. The key question is not only how many died, but who they were and how they died.
Fighters Are Counted as Civilians
The ministry does not distinguish between Hamas fighters and civilians. Hamas fighters do not wear uniforms, so every fighter killed in battle appears in the same total as an innocent child.
Israel says it killed more than 20,000 terrorists in Gaza, plus some 1,600 who invaded Israel on October 7. The IDF estimates that two to three civilians were killed for every combatant, a ratio it argues is lower than in comparable urban wars such as the battle for Mosul.
Problems With the Numbers
Early in the war, the ministry's totals included many unidentified bodies and media reports, and later it relied mainly on identified names. In May 2024 the UN updated its own breakdown, showing far fewer identified women and children than earlier headlines had suggested.
Single incidents were also exaggerated. In October 2023 Hamas claimed that Israel had killed 500 people at Al Ahli hospital. Israeli, American and other intelligence assessments found the blast was caused by a misfired Islamic Jihad rocket, with a much smaller toll.
Why So Many Civilians Died
Hamas built its war machine inside homes, schools, mosques and hospitals, and under them in hundreds of kilometers of tunnels. It fired rockets from crowded neighborhoods and urged civilians not to evacuate.
Israel dropped leaflets, sent text messages and made phone calls to warn civilians, and opened evacuation routes. No army in modern urban warfare has issued warnings on that scale. Read more: Is Israel Committing War Crimes?
Key Facts
The Gaza Health Ministry is part of the Hamas government.
Its figures do not separate combatants from civilians.
Israel says it killed more than 20,000 terrorists in Gaza.
Hamas fought from inside civilian buildings and from tunnels beneath them.
Claims about single incidents, such as Al Ahli hospital, were badly exaggerated.
How to Respond
Mourn every innocent life, and then ask how many of the dead were Hamas fighters.
Point out that the source of the numbers is a ministry run by Hamas.
Explain that civilian deaths in war are tragic but are not proof of war crimes or genocide.
Ask who chose to fight from among civilians.
Conclusion
Numbers without context are not facts, they are propaganda. The heavy toll in Gaza is the result of a war Hamas started and fought from behind its own people. Read more: Is Israel Committing Genocide?
