Israeli Intelligence Helped Save President Trump

The President of the United States was smuggled off Air Force One inside an airport catering container. He rode across a runway in Ankara hidden in a food cart, boarded a smaller military jet, and flew out of Turkey while his own plane took off as a decoy with his Secretary of State and a cabin full of journalists still on board.
That is not a movie plot. It happened last month, and according to the Wall Street Journal, the reason it happened is that Israeli intelligence told the Americans that Iran was preparing to shoot the president's aircraft out of the sky.
Read that again. Israel handed Washington the warning that may have kept an American president alive. And within roughly a day of that becoming public, the story circulating in Ankara was that Israel invented the whole thing.
What did Israeli intelligence actually tell the Americans?
According to the Journal's reporting, Israeli intelligence indicated that Iran was plotting to use shoulder fired missiles to bring down Trump's plane. American intelligence, on the final morning of the NATO summit in Turkey, picked up multiple streams pointing the same direction: that there was a specific threat of a surface to air missile against whichever aircraft was carrying the president, that someone near the summit had been spotted with a shoulder fired missile, and that the Iranians knew exactly where Trump was staying in Ankara, down to the floor of the building.
The people responsible for keeping the president alive did not treat it as noise. General Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was directly involved in assessing the threat and designing the response. The Secret Service asked Trump to leave his own plane. He agreed. "I go by Secret Service and the military," he told reporters afterward. "They wanted me to go in a different flight, different plane."
He announced on social media that he would fly home on the older Air Force One rather than the newer jet, for old time's sake. He walked up the stairs in front of the cameras and waved. Reporters boarded at the back and were told to keep their window shades down.
Then, on the far side of the aircraft, out of camera view, he was placed in a catering container, driven across the tarmac, and put aboard a smaller military jet parked nearby. That plane flew to a base in Britain with its transponders dark. The old Air Force One flew the same route as bait. In England, Trump was quietly moved back onto the big jet so he could walk down the stairs in front of the world as though he had never left.
The secrecy was so tight that some of his own staff did not know. Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, was reportedly aware of the threat and helped plan the operation before flying on the decoy anyway.
American commentators have spent this week arguing about the ethics of that. Whether the people left on that plane deserved to be told. Whether the press was used. Those are fair arguments in a free country, and I have no interest in telling Americans how to run their internal debate.
Why is nobody asking why Iran was aiming a missile at an American president?
The story is that the Islamic Republic of Iran has been openly promising to kill Donald Trump since the strike that killed Qassem Soleimani, that those promises are chanted at official regime commemorations, that a man has already been convicted in connection with an Iranian directed murder for hire plot against him, and that the regime apparently got close enough to know which floor of a building in Ankara he was sleeping on.
This is what Israelis have been trying to explain to the world for years, usually to blank stares. Iran does not do metaphors. When the regime says it will kill someone, it builds a file, finds a proxy, and tries. Israelis have buried people because of that file. Argentines have. Bulgarians have. Now it reaches the president of the United States on the soil of a NATO member state.
Turkish officials, speaking to Middle East Eye, floated the theory that the Israeli intelligence was a fabrication by Netanyahu's government, cooked up to look protective of Trump, to sabotage his negotiations with Iran, and to poison his relationship with Erdogan. One person familiar with the matter put it flatly: it was very clear to them that there was no way the report was true. Another sneered that they must need heroes for an attack that never happened and probably was never planned.
Notice the structure of that accusation. It is not evidence. It is motive assignment. Israel benefits, therefore Israel invented it. That is the oldest reasoning in the world when it comes to Jews, dressed up in diplomatic language and handed to a sympathetic outlet.
And notice what it requires you to believe. That the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the Secret Service and the American intelligence community were all played by a foreign fabrication, and that they were so thoroughly played that they physically removed the president of the United States from his own aircraft and sent it up empty of him as a target. Either American intelligence is a joke, or the threat was real. Ankara wants you to pick the first one.
There is a more honest counterpoint, and I will give it its due. Israeli officials told Channel 12 that some Americans considered the intelligence less specific than the Journal suggested, closer to general discussion among Iranian officials about killing Trump than a finished operational plot. Fine. But here is the thing about warnings. You do not get to grade them after nothing happens. Intelligence services pass along fragments, and the receiving country decides what to do with them. Israel passed it. Washington acted on it. The president is alive. That is what a functioning alliance looks like.
If any other nation had handed America that warning, there would be editorials about the value of the partnership. Because it was Israel, the warning itself became suspicious. That is the tell. In too many newsrooms and foreign ministries, Israeli intelligence is credible only when it is inconvenient for Israel.
I a suspicious of the journalists, did someone know about Trump’s whereabouts, and inform the Iranians? And when Trump was not on the plane, did that someone tell the Iranians not to shoot down the plane? Somebody must have known something and sent information to the enemy!
